Houston, Texas — On Monday, On July 6, 2026, an off-duty uniformed Houston Police Officer working extra employment in the 4000 Westheimer Road located a suspect, 30-year-old Jamarcus Oneal Spates, inside a stolen vehicle that had been reported stolen out of Fort Bend County and was also related to an assault. At approximately 7:23 p.m., uniformed, on-duty Houston Police Officers arrived to assist and attempted to perform a felony traffic stop on the parked vehicle. The Officers gave several verbal commands. Spates did not comply, remaining inside the vehicle for an extended period. At approximately 7:53 p.m., Officers then made a coordinated approach approached toward the vehicle, at which time Officers believed the suspect pushed open the driver’s door and extended his arm in a shooting position. Eight Officers and one Sergeant discharged their duty weapons, striking Spates. A drone was sent in prior to Officers extracting Spates from the vehicle. Officers then rendered aid until HFD paramedics arrived. Spates was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive. No Officers were injured. Spates was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle (a felony) in the 482nd Criminal District Court, with bond set at $35,000.
